Luke 13:10-13 KJV
“And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.”
We have been discussing how Jesus saw the woman with the infirmity 18 years, and how God sees our pain and the things we are confronting in our lives. Even if others don’t see what we are going through, Jesus does and God’s grace is sufficient to overcome any obstacle we face. Today as we continue, we will look at verse 13, “he laid his hands on her and immediately she was made straight…” it was not until Jesus laid His hands on her that she was made whole.
First, Jesus taught the Word, then He saw the woman. After that He spoke to her and finally Jesus laid hands on her. We see that same pattern throughout Jesus’ ministry, the Book of Acts, and in ministry in our day also. The laying on of hands is an important doctrine of Christ which we find outlined in Hebrews 6:1-2,
“Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.”
We also find it in Mark 16:17-20,
“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.”
We must not ignore such a powerful doctrine. We must remember:
1. The majority of the life and ministry of Jesus was healing the sick and. casting out devils.
2. Under the Old Testament, the laying on of hands was a symbolic type and shadow of what was to come.
3. We can see that people in the Old Testament laid hands on their firstborn and prophesied by faith concerning their future.
4. The priest would lay hands on the scapegoat, transfer the people’s sin onto the goat, and then would send it out into the wilderness.
5. Deuteronomy 34:9, “Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the Lord commanded Moses.”
Laying on of hands transfers the anointing. It is a method of impartation. I have experienced God’s presence many times as hands were laid on me.
Final thought; in the NLT, It says “He touched her.” I believe God is touching the hearts of people and drawing them back to Him. We are seeing the presence and manifestation of God’s love in our services. God is moving mightily in our meetings. Right now if you reach out to Him, He will touch you by His Spirit and you will be made whole.
Blessings
